This course will help employers and managers to understand and to comply with the Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992. Users of display screens are entitled to health and safety training, and this course is also suitable for this purpose. It also provides a means of analysing workstations and of recording each analysis.

The Regulations require employers to carry out a risk analysis on each workstation, assess the results and take steps to reduce any risks found. The health risks which need to be dealt with are :

• musculo-skeletal problems
• visual fatigue
• mental stress

The six steps of the assessment process are:

• gathering all necessary information
• planning the assessment
• carrying out the assessment
• analysis of findings
• implementing risk reduction
• monitoring and follow up

Module 9 contains a checklist which you may find useful when assessing your workstations.

• Flicker and glare free lighting
• Window coverings
• Comfortable temperature and humidity
• Clear, stable screen image
• Legible, matt, detachable keyboard
• Large, matt work surface
• Adjustable, supportive, stable, chair
• No distracting, intrusive noise
• Ample leg room
• User friendly, adaptable software
• No clandestine monitoring
