Power Station Series
"Chemistry"

The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of the principles of chemical reactions.

By the end of this course the student will be able to:

  • Define the terms: element, compound and mixture, and give an example of each.
  • Differentiate between chemical and physical changes, and give an example of each.
  • Describe how ionic compounds dissociate into ions in solution, with particular reference to aqueous solutions.
  • Define pH and relate its value to neutral, acidic and alkaline solutions.
  • Define the term 'conductivity' as applied to an aqueous solution.
  • Specify the nature of impurities found in natural untreated water, and state the potential problems of its use.
  • Explain the principles of ion exchange technology, and how dissolved ionic constituents may be removed from water.
