The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of the principles of chemical reactions.
By the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Define the terms: element, compound and mixture, and give an example of each.
- Differentiate between chemical and physical changes, and give an example of each.
- Describe how ionic compounds dissociate into ions in solution, with particular reference to aqueous solutions.
- Define pH and relate its value to neutral, acidic and alkaline solutions.
- Define the term 'conductivity' as applied to an aqueous solution.
- Specify the nature of impurities found in natural untreated water, and state the potential problems of its use.
- Explain the principles of ion exchange technology, and how dissolved ionic constituents may be removed from water.
