Aims :

• To consider equations for determining activity levels.
• To consider equations for determining dose rates.

Objectives :
By the end of this course the student will be able to:

• Derive and apply the equation for radioactive decay.
• Derive and apply the equation relating half-life and the decay constant.
• State the conditions for radioactive decay chains for secular equilibrium, transient equilibrium and no equilibrium.
• Sketch the curves for the three 'equilibrium' states.
• Given the equations for the states, calculate the activities.
• For a point source use equations to calculate the fluence rate and gamma dose rates.
• For a point source use equations to calculate the shielding requirements in conditions of good or poor geometry.
• Given the equation for neutron activation calculate the activity produced in an irradiated sample.
