Nuclear Series
"Control of Ionising Radiation"
Aims :
- To introduce methods of working safely with radiation and with radioactive substances.
Objectives :
By the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Define activity and state its SI unit.
- Explain the concepts of Annual Limit on Intake and Derived Air Concentration.
- Differentiate between radiation (the external radiation hazard) and contamination (the internal radiation hazard).
- Explain how the external radiation hazard is controlled by the principles: shielding, distance and time.
- State the four routes by which radioactivity can enter the human body and describe how working procedures can limit such entry.
- Summarise how compliance with the Safety Rules (Radiological) and associated documentation will achieve control of the radiation hazards.
