Nuclear Series
"Biological Effects of Ionising Radiations"
Aims :
- To examine the effects of ionising radiations on human beings.
- To outline the risks associated with radiation exposure.
Objectives :
By the end of this course the student will be able to:
- State what is meant by the following terms: acute, chronic and radiation syndrome.
- State the doses at which tissues exhibit early effects and give the LD 50/60 dose for humans.
- State the relationship between dose and the risk of fatal cancers and hereditary effects assumed in radiological protection and briefly explain the assumptions.
- Explain the meaning of the terms stochastic and non-stochastic effects of radiation, giving an example of each.
- Outline why risk factors are specified for different parts of the human body.
- Explain the concept, and state the SI units, of effective dose equivalent and committed dose equivalent.
