Nuclear Series
"Atomic Structure"
Aims :
- To introduce a simple model of the atom.
- To introduce the standard nomenclature used in Atomic and Nuclear Physics.
Objectives :
By the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Define the term element and describe a model of the atom in terms of the three sub-atomic particles
and state their relative mass and charge.
- State approximately the relative size of the atom and the nucleus.
- Define the terms nuclide, nucleon, mass number, atomic number and neutron number.
- Define the terms isotope, unified atomic mass unit and relative atomic mass.
- Briefly state how the Avogadro Number is used.
- Describe the ionic and the covalent chemical bonds.
